EX2306: Seascape Alaska 5 – Gulf of Alaska Remotely Operated Vehicle Exploration and Mapping

From August 23 – September 14, 2023, NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer traversed the Gulf of Alaska in Seascape Alaska 5 (EX2306). During this expedition, multibeam data was collected and ROV dives were conducted in the effort to better understand the mysterious waters surrounding the Aleutian Islands. In total, 19 ROV dives were conducted, over 28,287 km² of seafloor were mapped, and a variety of geological, biological, and water column samples were collected.

In the Spring of 2024, Explore the Seafloor students each selected 1-2 ROV dive videos and generated an annotated overview video- condensing a 6+ hour video into a 10-15 minute geomorphology and biota overview video. Students also processed the multibeam bathymetry data collected at each dive site, allowing for a more well-rounded understanding of their dive location(s). Each student’s dive overview video is highlighted below, alongside an image gallery slideshow that contains the static images and annotations associated with each observation.

The map below shows the location of each ROV dive conducted during this expedition.
